 &name.
 
Symbols represent display characters that may not be on the keyboard or that
can be confused with characters such as the colon (:) that have special
meaning to the IPF compiler. Each symbol represents a single character. The
symbol name identifies the character and the IPF compiler replaces the
symbol with the character when it processes the help source file.
 
Parameter  Description

name       Specifies the symbol name. It can be any one of the following
           predefined symbol names:

           &amp.        Ampersand
           &asterisk.   Asterisk
           &atsign.     At sign
           &bsl.        Back slash
           &bslash.     Back slash
           &caret.      Caret
           &cdq.        Closing double quotation mark
           &colon.      Colon
           &csq.        Closing single quotation mark
           &darrow.     Down arrow
           &dash.       Dash
           &dollar.     Dollar sign
           &eq.         Equal sign
           &gt.         Greater than sign
           &larrow.     Left arrow
           &lbrc.       Left brace
           &lbrk.       Left bracket
           &minus.      Minus sign
           &odq.        Opening double quotation mark
           &osq.        Opening single quotation mark
           &per.        Period
           &plus.       Plus sign
           &splitvbar.  Split vertical bar (pipe symbol)

All symbols are defined in the file apsymbol.aps. This file can be edited
using any text editor that supports character values above 127.
 
Example
 
This example uses the &colon. symbol in text to prevent the IPF compiler
from interpreting the colon as the start of a tag.
